Talks at UKOUG TECH 2014 with CERN Speakers

This is a short blog post with a list of the talks at the UKOUG TECH 2014 conference in Liverpool with CERN speakers. Come and say hi, we hope to see many of you there!

• Modern Linux Tools for Oracle Troubleshooting (*)
• This talk covers a few examples of the use of Flame Graphs and perf for investigating CPU-bound  Oracle workloads and the use of SystemTap for tracing and measuring Oracle I/O
• A Closer Look at CALIBRATE_IO (*)
• This talk is about I/O testing, with examples based on drilling down on the use of CALIBRATE_IO and of SLOB for testing Oracle random I/O workloads.
• The Importance of Having an Appropriate Data Segmentation (Partitioning) (link is external)
• This talk covers practical examples of the use of partitioning in Oracle.

UKOUG Tech13, Latency Investigations and Lost Writes

I am looking forward to participating again to the UKOUG annual conference. This year I will present together with my colleague Marcin Blaszczyk on two topics that are follow-up of articles in this blog.
The first talk is: Storage Latency for Oracle DBAs. A presentation about a performance tuning techniques for Oracle and storage, based on the study of latency wait event histograms and their representations with heat maps. It will be a good occasion also to show examples of the usage of OraLatencyMap and PyLatencyMap.
The second talk is: Lost Writes, a DBA’s Nightmare? This is a short presentation about lost writes in Oracle, based on our production experience. It's still surprising to me how such a seemingly unimportant failure class can in reality generate very complex failure and recovery scenarios.

Active Data Guard and UKOUG 2012

I am looking forward to participating again to the UKOUG annual conference (and also to attend the Sunday's OakTable event). This is for me a great opportunity to meet and discuss with many passionate Oracle experts who regularly attend the conference and also to get up-to-date with the latest technology and news from the Oracle community.
My colleague Marcin and I have just finished preparing our presentation on the subject of Active Data Guard. I have enjoyed the work even though, as it is often the case, this has taken quite some effort from both of us to reach the level of details we wanted.
Our goal with this presentation is to share our thoughts and experience on Active Data Guard as we have seen it mature in our production environment in the last 10 months. We will discuss, with examples, what we think are the great points of the technology for our use cases and what we have learned from production deployment. What has worked.. and what has not worked!
